The Children in Care Service aims to promote the well being and success of children in care as well as prevent harm. The service area includes the two long-term teams for children in care below the age of 16 years. The teams work with children and young people who are placed in residential or foster care or with relatives or friends who are approved as long-term carers.

The Children in Care Permanency Team prepares children for long-term foster care and adoption. The team is responsible for ensuring that wherever possible all children and young people are placed with permanent carers who can provide an emotionally, secure, stable, permanent placement which meets their needs.

The Adoption and Permanence team provides a comprehensive and statutory adoption and permanency service which includes advice and counselling, recruitment, assessment, approval, training and support of prospective adopters, including those who wish to adopt from overseas; the matching, introduction and placing of children for whom adoption or long term fostering is the permanence plan.

Post adoption support is provided to those whose lives have been touched by adoption including birth records counselling and intermediary services. It also provides a service for step parent and relative adoption, kinship care and special guardianship.
