Governing Bodies Support provides a high quality, responsive service

GBS provides support to school staff and governors to ensure governance operates effectively and efficiently. The service helps governors develop as school leaders who secure school improvement and meet their key roles to:

  • Ensure that the vision, ethos & strategic direction of the school are clearly defined
  • Hold the Headteacher to account  for the educational performance of the school and its pupils
  • Ensure the sound, proper and effective use of the school’s financial resources
  • Ensure leadership complies with statutory regulations
  • Engage stakeholders

The service offer includes:

  • Professional support from officers with many years experience of procedures and best practice in governance, as providers of services and as governors ourselves
  • Development of your governing body to ensure it meets statutory responsibilities and expectations of governance

Governor Development and Training

  • Induction materials for new governors
  • Comprehensive training programme of core and topical courses
  • Bespoke whole governing body training (one session per annum)

  • Option to buy Modern Governor low cost e-learning subscription
  • Publicity and links to SGOSS (Governors for Schools) and Inspiring Governors to support recruitment
  • Advice and support to staff and governors on governance issues


Governing Body Clerking

  • Liaison with Head and Chair to prepare agendas focused on school improvement and production of agreed minutes
  • Preparation and electronic circulation of papers and some hard copy documents for GB meetings
  • Provision of procedural, best practice and legal advice
  • Recruitment, training and allocation of correspondents to minute and give advice at GB Meetings
  • Processing correspondent payments and contracts
  • Supply new governors with disqualification declaration, and register of interest forms
